The reason for the farm’s existence is firstly as a haven for people to come and rest, and to be able to hear the Lord in the unsullied and pure atmosphere of the Karoo. Secondly to show that a development within the area will not impact negatively on the surrounding environment. The farm must be completely self-sustainable, but allow for systems of survival that are both comfortable and ecologically sound

It is incumbent on modern man to learn the ways of tribal people, who have managed for centuries to live outside of western man’s civilization.  I am always reminded of the fact that God created Adam and Eve and placed them in a garden, not a city.  So maybe all of the city slickers will learn something totally new, which can only benefit them and widen their horizons.

Several opportunities are made available to the community of Shiloh such as:

Growing of vegetables and herbs will be done indoors using hydroponics, but we will be growing Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbaclensis) which is endemic to the region for harvesting and health purposes. Aloe, native to Africa, is also known as "Lily of the Desert", the "Plant of Immortality", and the "Medicine Plant".  In 1500 BC Egyptians recorded use of the herbal plant in treating burns, infections and parasites very successfully. Ancient Greeks, Arabs and Spaniards have used the plant throughout the millennia.  African hunters still rub the gel on their bodies to reduce perspiration and their scent.

There are also other plants which are endemic to the area that the Bushmen have been using for food and medicine for centuries, which we will be learning to cultivate and harvest. We will be doing some research on the habits, lifestyle and culture of the Bushmen.

Cataloging and researching of the indigenous plants, flowers, insects, birds, reptiles, mammals (eg The endangered Riverine Rabbit) etc.

Besides the cultivation and growing of plants, we will also be learning home industry methods which go back to the days before modern industrialization. eg: before TV, radio’s the motor car, cell phones and computers etc.

The Farm itself will run on solar power, and together with the bio plant will be totally self generated.

Here is a list of some of the other areas of learning and development.

Animal Husbandry (Sheep, Cattle, Chickens)

Growing  herbs and vegetables hydroponically

Soap and Candle making

Bee keeping

Making of cheese, butter and yoghurt

Bread baking using Cob ovens

Making paint using organic materials

Survival techniques of the desert and semi desert

Navigation and tracking of animals in the wild

Food preservation- drying and packaging

Art and photography

and many many more workshops available

And of course with one of the largest telescope observatories close by we can learn about the Universe that our God created.

So as you can see there will hardly be time to be bored!
